This course is designed to introduce students to literature and its many elements. Students will learn the process of reading, writing and responding to literature. As they engage in different classic and contemporary works from diverse authors students will study fiction, point of view, characters, setting, structure, tone, symbolism, and theme. Students will respond critically to readings of William Faulkner, Gwendolyn Brooks, Mark Twain, Aesop, Edgar Allan Poe, Sylvia Plath, Kate Chopin, Robert Frost, Julia De Burgos, and others. At the end of this course, students will apply previous lessons to analyze and critique a piece of work by an author of their choice.
