A historical overview of the teaching of English in Puerto Rico from 1898 to the present will serve as the foundation for the discussion of current issues related to ESL instruction. The principles underlying the teaching of foreign languages will also be analyzed. Different approaches, methods, educational and research strategies, and techniques for the teaching of English as a second language will be explored. Teacher candidates will plan demonstration classes and also unit and lesson plans for the development of skills based on national and local standards. Thirty hours of laboratory experiences in an elementary ESL classroom are required as well.
